Chelsea 1-0 Middlesbrough

Chelsea leapfrogged over Arsenal to reclaim second place and cut Manchester United’s advantage at the Barclays Premier League summit to five points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.A rare goal by defender Ricardo Carvalho ended up settling the contest but Boro left Stamford Bridge wondering how they had not come away with at least a point, a feat they had achieved at Arsenal a few weeks earlier.

Substitute Afonso Alves was the main culprit by hitting the woodwork twice with the goal at his mercy and defender David Wheater also headed against the crossbar.

Chelsea had to ride their luck to win a game they could have sewn up much earlier had they taken chances of their own and Avram Grant’s side can now breathe a sigh of relief before turning their attentions to Wednesday night’s Champions League showdown in Istanbul against Fenerbahce.Carvalho goals do not arrive very often but usually they have worth. The defender had not found the net for almost a year following his only goal of the game against Tottenham in April 2007.

The alarm bells had already been ringing for Boro when goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer reacted like a waxwork dummy to allow Didier Drogba’s 25-yard shot to bounce back in to the danger zone.

Fortunately Wheater was there to mop up but there was no such reprieve when Gary O’Neil fouled Michael Ballack on the left touchline and Wayne Bridge floated a sixth-minute free-kick into a crowded box.

Carvalho was beyond the penalty spot but nonetheless was able to place his header out of Schwarzer’s reach to give his side the lead.

Boro looked shell-shocked and were relieved when Drogba’s header flashed into the side-netting from a corner but the visitors eventually gained enough composure to respond.

George Boateng and Stewart Downing caused trouble with long-range efforts and home goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was caught out by a Luke Young cross that needed the recalled Juliano Belletti to head behind.

But the clear-cut chances belonged to the title contenders and Joe Cole fired wastefully over after Drogba had set him up with a cushioned lay-off.

Boro were not lacking resolve however, with Boateng throwing his weight around in midfield and defenders throwing their bodies in the way of shots as Michael Essien found out.

The Ghanaian then set up Salomon Kalou in front of goal following a powerful run down the right but again red shirts piled up in front of him to bar the way.

The half ended with Drogba unable to record his 14th goal of the season. First a free-kick was deflected just wide and then, after Cole had crossed from the right, the striker planted a free header over.

Lee Cattermole caught him late and from behind a few seconds later but he was eventually able to complete the first 45 minutes.

Drogba returned for the second instalment, which saw Chelsea dominate as before but Mikel John Obi and Essien were both off-target with long-rangers, although the latter’s powerful effort only just cleared the Boro crossbar.

Tuncay Sanli’s afternoon, which had seen him come off worse in a first-half clash of heads, ended just after the hour mark when the heavily-bandaged Turk was replaced by Alves.

Chelsea then replaced Ballack with Shaun Wright-Phillips, who immediately wasted two excellent chances.

The first, after Cole had put him through, he rolled past Schwarzer but inches wide of the far post. The second was sent looping over the bar after Kalou had given him another sight of goal.

The winger was almost made to pay for his profligacy as Alves wasted his side’s best chance, heading wide after Downing had picked him out in the box with a clever left-footed curler from the right.

Luck favoured Chelsea from the next attack when Cudicini came out to meet Cattermole’s ball for Alves to chase - and failed to make contact.

Defenders poured back but Alves calmly took aim - and hit a post, with Cudicini gratefully grabbing the rebound.

Astonishingly, the substitute hit the goal-frame again - this time the bar - with Wheater doing exactly the same from the rebound and Chelsea were at last able to breathe easily when Jeremie Aliadiere failed to hit the target seconds later.

Boro threw men forward in added time - including Schwarzer - but Chelsea hung on for a victory that should have been far more comfortable.

Grant admits Blues were lucky

Chelsea manager Avram Grant admitted his side had ridden their luck to beat Middlesbrough but insisted nothing but results are important at this stage of the season. Ricardo Carvalho’s sixth-minute goal ended up being the decider but Boro hit the woodwork three times and might also have had a penalty.

The win took Chelsea above Arsenal into second place in the Barclays Premier League table and five points behind leaders Manchester United - who travel to Boro next week.

Grant conceded that his players had been forced to hang on at the end but correctly countered that more clinical finishing earlier on, especially from Didier Drogba and substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips, could have put the game out of the visitors’ reach.

He said: ‘They hit the crossbar two times but at the other end Shaun could have scored twice and Didier in the first half.

‘I cannot say that it was our best game but it was important for us to win today rather than have quality in the game.

‘It is a good win. They were unlucky, but we also created some good chances from open play. We started very well and, maybe because of that, we thought it would be easy. ‘We controlled the ball and controlled the game but by not making it 2-0, it became a good chance for the other team. But I think we deserved the win.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate backed the Brazilian, who has yet to score despite his £12million price tag, to come good sooner rather than later.

‘You get two or three chances maximum at places like this and you have to take them. I thought Afonso was a threat when he came on, it was the sharpest he has been for us.

‘The first one he created for himself and did everything right. Obviously it was galling to see it come off the post. Probably the free header was the best chance, where he missed the target, but that’s going to happen.

He will get his match-sharpness and he will score goals for us.’ Chelsea defender Juliano Belletti was perhaps fortunate to escape conceding a penalty in the second half. Southgate said: ‘I can only compare it to one that was given against us at Villa about three weeks ago when our player wasn’t even looking at the ball. ‘It wasn’t as if the ball was played from close range, it was a long while coming. It hit him and then rolled down his arm. We have seen them given - but not for us.’Here
